Selection of new MATC President

At least one person at Madison Area Technical College will be covered by a contract after March 23, 2014. Our new president, Jack E. Daniels has negotiated a contract with the Board of Trustees of Madison College that begins on August 19, 2013 and runs through June 30, 2016.

In addition to a starting salary of $238,000, Daniels will receive a generous benefits package. That package includes an “Incidental Expense Stipend” of $500 per semester “for incidental expenses related to college business (no receipt required).”

A copy of the two-page Daniels contract was obtained by The Wisconsin State Journal and published online on July 2, 2013 as a sidebar to an article by reporter Dan Simmons titled “MATC board selects Jack Daniels as new school president.”

A message from Local 243 President Marie Dusio:

Shortly after 1 p.m. on Monday, July 1, 2013 the Madison College Board of Trustees announced that Dr. Jack E. Daniels has been selected to serve as the college’s eighth president. Reprinted below is the bulletin that was sent via e-mail to all Faculty Members and Administrative Staff [emphasis and photograph added]:

The Madison College District Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that Dr. Jack E. Daniels III has been chosen to serve as Madison College’s eighth president. Dr. Daniels will join Madison College on August 19, 2013. Dr. Barhorst has agreed to remain in place through the transition.

We were fortunate to have three strong finalists with unique talents and knowledge, but Dr. Daniels emerged as our first choice. His proven record of focusing on student success; establishing a positive work environment that facilitates faculty and employee success and development; fostering collaborative relationships with the community, elected officials, K-12 and other educational institutions, and business and industry; demonstrating an engaging interpersonal style and communication skills; and serving as a motivational and visionary leader and president at multi-campus colleges were factors that weighed heavily into the decision that was made by the District Board of Trustees.

A message from Local 243 President Marie Dusio:

As of 10:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, June 30, 2013 there has been no announcement about what candidate the members of the Madison Area Technical College District Board have selected to serve as as the college’s next president.

Several people have asked me what I think it means. Others wonder if something [bad)] has happened. I do not know the answers to these questions. I do know that the Board met for several hours Thursday evening, June 27, 2013; but I do not know when that meeting ended or what was decided.

Even if the Board has reached consensus, I do not find it difficult to imagine they would have offered some time (perhaps 24 hours or until Monday) for the candidate to accept or reject their offer. In addition, although they may have reached consensus, made an offer, and the chosen candidate has expressed sincere interest, it is possible there are continuing negotiations on the compensation (and relocation, if there is one) package(s).

A message from Local 243 President Marie Dusio:

Sisters and Brothers,

After Science Instructor Holly Walter Kerby so eloquently posed the question about feedback that was on many minds at the Truax session on Wednesday afternoon, I spoke with several members of the Madison Area Technical College District Board. Some reported that they have already received feedback via e-mail. I described the process employed in the Eastern region and volunteered to assist in any way to assure our input would be solicited and delivered to the Board. They were open to our input and offered the following as the best mechanism for soliciting feedback after the last Truax session:

At the 12:45 p.m. Truax session tomorrow (Thursday, June 27, 2103) I will distribute a half-page form that will ask you to “check the box” of your preferred candidate, as well as add your comments on all three finalists. I will collect the forms shortly after the session ends.
