Rockwell_1943_Rosie-the-RiveterNow that Spring Break is over, representatives from the Local 243 Recertification Committee will once again be visiting the Madison College regional campuses to answer questions and provide information regarding the First Annual Certification Election, union efforts, and union membership.

Local 243 will be providing box lunches for all full-time faculty and PSRP staff during these visits. So look for the union table, stop by, grab your lunch, and ask questions.

Union and campus reps will be staffing the tables this week between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the following locations

Monday, March 23, 2015 – Commercial Avenue Campus
Tuesday, March 24, 2015 – DTEC
Wednesday, March 25, 2015 – Watertown Campus
Thursday, March 25, 2015 – South Campus

Albert-EinsteinMany well-known Americans have been AFT members, including John Dewey, Albert Einstein, Hubert Humphrey, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Frank McCourt, Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel, former Senate Majority Leader and Ambassador to Japan Mike Mansfield, former Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala, and former United Nations Undersecretary and Nobel Peace Prize winner Ralph Bunche.

Albert Einstein was a founding member of AFT Local 552 at Princeton University in 1938. He devoted an entire chapter of his memoir “Out of My Later Years” to his thoughts on the “organization of intellectual workers.” Here’s a brief selection:

“An organization of intellectual workers can have the greatest significance for society as a whole by influencing public opinion through publicity and education. Indeed, it is the proper task to defend academic freedom, without which a healthy development of democracy is impossible.”

Signing up for membership in Local 243 is easy.

An online membership form is now available. Please take a moment to complete the form today: it’s as easy as One,Two, Three, Four:

        1. Go to the AFT-Wisconsin website and click on 0243-MATC Madison in the drop down box..
        2. Select your dues category (salary range) in the next drop down box, then click: Join
        3. Complete the membership form. Enter your current Committee on Political Education (COPE) contribution amount (if applicable). If not currently contributing to COPE, enter your new COPE contribution amount in order to support the political work of our union. (NO dues money is spent on political purposes: COPE is the way such activities are funded).
        4. Click on: Authorize Payment

A message from Local 243 President Marie Dusio: The reMember (membership) drive is still underway – so please take a moment or two during Convocation (Friday, March 14, 2014) to get your questions answered and fill out a form.

Members of our Local and Charles Peterson (our AFT Organizer) will be outside the Mitby from 8 a.m. through 10:30 a.m. After that, you can find them in the Cafeteria and after 4 they will be in C1435.
