WE are the best source, so why outsource? During the public comments section of the Madison Area Technical College District Board meeting on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, three members of Local 243 presented the resolution against outsourcing of custodial services to board members. During the meeting, board members voted 4-3 in favor of outsourcing. According to Local 243 President Marie Dusio, “Although this is not the outcome we would have liked, it was a split vote following significant discussion – which might be viewed as positive.”

Local 243 held a general membership meeting on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 during which members voted unanimously to pass the “Best Source – Keep it in House” anti-outsourcing campaign resolution. This resolution had been unanimously approved by the Forum and has garnered more than 600 signatures on petitions supporting it. Students have also developed petitions and other labor groups have passed or are working on resolutions in support of our position against outsourcing.

This morning, The Capital Times published a Letter to the Editor written by Local 243 member Michael Bertrand, who has taught in the IT Department at MATC for 29 years, under the headline “Outsourcing custodial services at MATC contrary to values.”

You may read the letter online (although you may encounter a paywall if you’ve accessed the online version of the newspaper more than 10 times this month). We believe that Michael Bertrand’s letter should be available free to all Local 243 members and so we’re reprinting it here on our blog, too:

AFT Local 243 President Marie Dusio will present our petitions against outsourcing tonight (Wednesday, March 13, 2013) at the District Board meeting. The meeting will be held at the Truax campus in the Board Room (Administration Building) starting at 5:30 p.m.

Show your support by wearing your t-shirt to the meeting. We’re just going to attend as a presence to let the board and public know we are watching and that this is important to us and to the community.

The shirts matter. After the last District Board meeting, when a small number of members showed up in the shirts, management was very concerned and set up meetings with all three shifts of college custodians. We want management to know that this is a fight for the entire union and that we stand in solidarity with our coworkers.

Remember to wear your “Best Source/Keep It in House” light blue t-shirt to Convocation on Tuesday
