Madison Area Technical College District Board meetings

Checkmark-225wThe MATC District Board “punted on a controversial proposal to sell its campus Downtown and expand its presence on the South Side at a Wednesday night meeting,” according to a report by Dan Simmons published in the Wisconsin State Journal.

“The plan – which failed to pass on a 4-4 vote with one board seat vacant — prompted intense testimony by a list of city luminaries followed by a robust, at times testy debate among the board,” writes Simmons. “If we sell it, it’s gone forever,” board member Joseph Hasler said of the proposal that would have given the college authority to start hearing offers to sell the Downtown campus. “It’s a valuable piece of property.”

Ultimately, board members unanimously passed resolutions to abandon the West campus — the third, uncontroversial piece of President Daniels’ plan — and “take more time for the college to flesh out plans” for both the DTEC and South Madison sites.

The CHS building was torn down in 1986 to make way for a parking lot. All that remains is the historic arch on Wisconsin Avenue. The five-story section on the right was added in the 1950s.

There are likely to be a large number of people from the community in attendance at the Madison Area Technical College District Board’s meeting at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, 2015. Isthmus reporter Joe Tarr — and more than 100 other people — attended the Wednesday, April 8, 2014 meeting of the MATC District Board. Tarr wrote a lengthy article about what transpired. In it he noted “Daniels’ controversial recommendation is to ‘Sell DTEC.'” In addition, Daniels asked the board to end the West lease and look for space on the south side for a comprehensive campus.

Tarr also reported that Daniels made his recommendation despite the fact that, “The college’s Assembly, a 26-member advisory body that is part of the institution’s ‘shared governance’ system, declined to approve the sale of DTEC earlier in the week.” A copy of the Metro Campus Task Force and FPIC Recommendation that was “thumbed down” (i.e., not approved) at the April 6, 2015 Special College Assembly Meeting is available for download, as is an agenda for that meeting.
