On November 12, 2014 the Madison Area Technical College Board will be voting to approve the tentative agreement negotiated by the AFT Local 243 bargaining team, and ratified by the Local 243 membership. Please keep the following points in mind:

  • Our Union, AFT Local 243, is the exclusive bargaining agent for our members.
  • The bargaining committee worked very hard over the summer to come up with the best possible terms for our members.
  • The Union’s interest was to come up with a fiscally responsible cost of living raise up to the maximum raise allowable under Act 10

Checkmark-225wLocal 243 members interested in observing upcoming Contract Alternative Committee (CAC) meetings are encouraged to sign up online. The meetings are open to “internal Madison College constituents” on a first-come, first-served basis. Ten slots will be available per meeting.

Potential observers may sign up for available meetings through the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) website. Potential observers must have attended (at a minimum) the one-hour IBPS “Primer” learning session** prior to observing a meeting. Observers will be required to read through and agree to the terms in the Contract Alternative Committee Ground Rules for Meeting Observation before observing a meeting.

The Contract Alternative Committee (CAC) and the Shared Governance Task Force SGTF) will continue meeting over the summer. We would like to be able to continue soliciting input, but are aware that many employees take vacation during this time and may not consistently monitor their Madison College e-mail account.

Full Time Faculty are invited to provide their input on Interest-Based Problem Solving (IBPS) issues at a listening session scheduled from 5 p.m. until 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, April 24, 2014 in Room D2625 on the Truax Campus.

Carola Pfortner, one of the three representatives for the Full Time Faculty on the IBPS/Contract Alternative Committee, will be at this listening session to listen to member input and insights in preparation for the next IBPS/Contract Alternative Committee (CAC) meeting.

According to Pfortner, “Among issues to be discussed by the CAC in the near future are faculty workload (professional development; non-teaching work, i.e. service, learning facilitation) and the assessment of the workload quantitatively. Furthermore, up for discussion is the next round of early retirement, sick leave, and due process.”

On April 1, 2014, Patricia F Svendsen sent out a message about summer school assignments to all Full Time and Part Time Faculty on behalf of Madison Area Technical College President Jack E. Daniels, III. That message is reprinted below. The policy document referred to in the message — “Interim/Summer Session 2014 Faculty Assignment Process – Bridge for Interim/Summer 2014” — may be downloaded from the Local 243 website.

The Contract Alternative Committee’s (CAC) team of full and part-time faculty have been working extensively for the past few months on a policy regarding the interim/summer session. On Saturday, the CAC “thumbed up” the attached policy, Interim/Summer Session 2014 Faculty Assignment Process – Bridge for Interim/Summer 2014. As a part of reviewing the policy, it had to be determined if it was administratively feasible to implement the recommended changes for the interim session. After consultation with Human Resources (HR), the proposed changes for the interim were determined to be feasible as well as for the summer. I approved this policy and it will be effective for the Interim and Summer terms, 2014.
