Cycle for SightA message from Local 243 member Gerard Xavier, who works in the Counseling and College Success Department:

I am writing to ask for your support for a fundraiser I will be participating in on March 14, 2015. McPherson Eye Research Institute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has been involved with cutting edge research on eye diseases through the use of stem cells. The breakthroughs have been astounding and meaningful: Restoration of vision for thousands of people is fast becoming a reality. I am very optimistic that I will have some form of restored vision in the next 10 years.

The name of my team is “Blind Take Off” and we will be using the spinning cycles at Princeton Club West, 800 Watts Road at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2015. This is our second year participating in this fundraiser. Our team raised approximately $1600 last year and the entire fundraiser brought in about $30,000.

Running for OfficeA message from Local 243 member Robin Gee:

Madison College Instructor Rebecca Parish has been working with the League of Women Voters – Dane County to set up voter registration tables at some of our Madison campuses.

Rebecca has left the Madison area, but remains connected to the college as an online instructor. Now that she is not here, she is trying to do what she can from afar but hoping that another faculty or staff member or members might take over as the liaison to the League.

The liaison role would include:

  • Working with the League of Women Voters to plan tabling (Kathleen Fullin is the LWV contact)
  • Reserving tables for a LWV registration table at our campuses
  • Publicizing the tables (notices to student life/Clarion, Matters and printing out and putting up posters — not sure if LWV has posters for you to use or if you have to create them).
  • Getting parking passes if possible for the LWV people
  • Lining up a person at each campus on the day of the event to help LWV get set up, access wifi, etc.

food_drive_2014_flat_rgb_redo-250wA message from Robin Gee, Local 243 SCFL delegate:

The National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive is scheduled for Saturday, May 10th. 2014. In Dane County and nationwide, this is the largest ONE DAY food collection for the entire year. And, by utilizing food resources, individuals and families are able to stretch their household budgets and cover other necessities — such as housing costs, utilities, and transportation.

YOU can help in two ways: First, please leave non-perishable food items out that day for your letter carrier to pick up. [No glass containers, please!] Also help advertise the drive by encouraging your friends, neighbors, and fellow Union members to participate.
