Thumbs upA message from Local 243 President Marie Dusio:

Preliminary results from the WERC suggest both the PSRP/ESP Chapter and the Full-time Faculty Chapter of AFT Local 243 have re-certified by overwhelming majorities!! While we await official confirmation, a huge thanks to Theresa Valencia (Chair) and all of the Recertification Committee members; staffers Jill, Ben, and LaVina; and every single one of you who voted, for making this possible. Congratulations!!

In addition, preliminary results suggest all AFT-Wisconsin locals involved in the April 2015 elections – including our brothers and sisters in the Part Time Faculty Local 6100 – re-certified! Congratulations to them all!

A copy of the WETC document detailing the initial tallies for all recertification elections in Wisconsin conducted during the period from April 1-21, 2015 is available for download from our website.

VoteA message from Theresa Valencia:

This has been an experience of a lifetime for me. Thanks for allowing me to be a part of AFT 243 history. When I was voted in as a forum member for AFT 243 I had no idea what I was getting into. I have learned plenty in the last 10 months and still have plenty to learn.

One thing I have learned loud and clear is the majority of faculty and PSRP overwhelmingly support having a union. Jill, Ben and I have so appreciated all the kind words and encouragement as we navigate new waters post act 10. We have until noon on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 to get every last vote in. I know there are a few of you either sitting on the fence, or planning on voting tomorrow. Well tomorrow has arrived and you can’t wait any longer. Please everyone who has not voted get it done tomorrow, and let us know when you have.

Dollar sign“Being represented by a union appears to pay big financial dividends for full-time instructors at community colleges,” concludes a new study recently reported in The Chronicle of Higher Education.

“The differences are stunning,” says Stephen G. Katsinas, a professor of higher education at the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa who is one of the study’s three co-authors.

“Depending on the size, location, and public-financing sources of their institution, unionized full-time instructors earn from about 5 to 50 percent more in pay and benefits than do their nonunionized peers at similar community colleges,” according to the study results.
