Despite efforts by Governor Scott Walker and the Republican-controlled Wisconsin Legislature to destroy public employee unions in Wisconsin, the Associated Press (AP), reports that data from the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission (WERC) “show the majority of 400 school worker unions survived recertification elections and can continue to negotiate members’ wages.”

The WERC released figures yesterday that show members of roughly 81 percent of the unions voted to allow the organizations to continue wage negotiations.

A message from Local 243 President Marie Dusio: The 3+3/Interest Based Problem Solving (IBPS)/Contract Alternative Committees have been meeting. There are two days of meetings this week and several more already scheduled during Convocation.

I hear and agree it is frustrating that all of the answers to all of the questions have not yet been resolved. This is, in large part, due to three factors:

A message from Local 243 President Marie Dusio: The Madison Area Technical College (MATC) Public Safety Department made a presentation to the MATC District Board at the December 11, 2013 meeting expressing their interest in providing Tasers to full time officers.

Local 243 did not make a formal statement to the District Board concerning Tasers because, at this time, Local 243 does not have a position for or against the presence/use of Tasers on campus.

The Executive Board of the Local 243 Forum made a request to the District Board that this significant change go through the IBPS (Interest-Based Problem Solving) process before a decision is made. The Executive Board sent letter to MATC Vice Aaron President Burkes identifying areas of concern, specifically the lack of information that has been shared district-wide.

Local 243 members are invited to attend an advance screening of “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom ” at 6 p.m. on Monday, December 23, 2013 at the AMC Fitchburg, 6091 McKee Road.

Directed by Justin Chadwick and starring Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela, the film is based on Mandela’s 1994 autobiograhy, “Long Walk to Freedom.” It chronicles Nelson Mandela’s life journey from his childhood in a rural village through to his inauguration as the first democratically elected president of South Africa.

This event is sponsored by the South Central Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO; African Women’s Association of Madison; UW-Madison African Studies Program; UW-Madison African Student Association; African Association of Madison; and Faith Community Baptist Church. Tickets are $9 and may be purchased online.

New AFT-Wisconsin President Kim Kohlhaas

As you might know, delegates at the 2013 AFT-Wisconsin Convention voted overwhelmingly to approve a vote on the question of merger with the Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC). Our national organizations are currently reviewing the details of the documents for the proposed merged organization. Once any necessary adjustments have been made, the full documents will be shared with all members in early January 2014.
