A message from Local 243 President Mario Dusio

There is a difference in opinion between Local 243 and Madison Area Technical College about how Faculty Assignment Order should be interpreted now that the part-time faculty union does not have a collective bargaining agreement defining “probationary” and “non-probationary” status.

The College has made it clear that the budget gap must be closed to prevent layoffs. Since both the College and Local 243 understand layoffs may not solve the problem of uncovered classes and will harm the College and its workers, we are continuing to try to resolve this matter. Local 243 leaders met once and will meet again with our legal counsel concerning this (and other) matters.

A message from Local 243 President Mario Dusio

Chapter Vice-Presidents Joe Lowndes and Linda Nellen and I met with Provost Terry Webb and Vice-President Chuck McDowell on Friday, March 15, 2013 to discuss Local 243’s formal demand to begin bargaining on a successor contract.

Mr. McDowell brought our request to the Madison Area Technical College District Board during the closed session of their Wednesday, March 13, 2013 meeting. He reported that the Board is only willing to engage in negotiations concerning base wages, but does want the College to work on maintaining their relationship with us. (You might recall our current contracts now require the College and Union to form committees to address wages, benefits, and working conditions after our collective bargaining agreements expire).

During the meeting, board members voted 4-3 in favor of outsourcing. According to Local 243 President Marie Dusio, “Although this is not the outcome we would have liked, it was a split vote following significant discussion – which might be viewed as positive.”
