A message from Local 243 President Mario Dusio

There has been some confusion about current contracts and the possibility of successor contracts, so I want to clarify what is happening.

I want to assure you that AFT-Wisconsin and AFT-National are committed to working with and supporting locals, including in situations when our contracts might have to be defended against legal challenges. Our membership in the state and national organizations provides us, and all affiliated locals, access to excellent legal support.

Applications are now being accepted for the American Federation of Teachers Robert G. Porter Scholars Program.

During his tenure as secretary-treasurer of the AFT, Porter played an invaluable role in leading the union during an era of explosive growth. After his death in 1991, the AFT executive council established the Robert G. Porter Scholars Program in 1992.

Every year, this program offers four 4-year, $8,000 post-secondary scholarships to graduating high school seniors who are dependents of AFT members. In addition, it offers 10 one-time $1,000 grants to AFT members to assist with their continuing education.

Union brothers and sisters interested in fighting potential outsourcing of our custodial staff (and management’s future plans for outsourcing in more departments), are invited to join the Best Source Action Group in a meeting from 4:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Friday, February 22, 2013 at Pedro’s East (3555 East Washington Avenue in Madison).

The group is meeting regularly to plan strategy for combating this threat. Members have launched a campaign with t-shirts, buttons, and a petition. If you haven’t signed the anti-outsourcing petition, please do! Union members are circulating the petition and students are joining in with their own petition. Other actions are in the planning stages. We need your help and involvement to fight this important fight.

WE are the best source, so why outsource?
